Environmentally friendly lens cleaners.

Now that you have your first pair of eyewear made from recycled clothing, it is important to know how to take care of your glasses. As we are striving to reduce the impact of climate change, it is only beneficial to understand how your glasses can have the longest life possible.

When you clean your glasses properly, you can avoid scratches and keep your glasses looking brand new for a longer time. Sometimes it’s easier to go for convenient options (like your shirt or tissues) to clean your glasses, but this causes micro-abrasions which leads to small scratches on your glasses.

We have compiled a list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to cleaning your glasses in an environmentally friendly way, therefore not only saving your glasses but also saving the planet.

Check your glasses for dust

Before cleaning your glasses, remove any dust particles or debris from your glasses. Anything that is on the surface of the lenses of your glasses may scratch your lenses when you apply pressure on it. You can remove the dust particles or debris by rinsing your lenses underwater, or blow off your glasses before wiping them.

Deep cleaning

When your glasses are in need of a deep clean, you can use water and soap to get rid of smudges and dust.

First, wash your hands to ensure that you don’t transfer any dirt from your hands to your glasses. Next, rinse your glasses under running water to remove any dust and debris. Apply a little bit of eco-friendly dish soap or eco-friendly hand soap to the lenses and rub the lenses between your thumb and index finger. Lastly, wipe your lenses with a clean microfiber cloth.

Eco-friendly glasses cleaning cloth

Many glasses come with a cleaning cloth. We recommend using them in order to avoid waste. If you are in need of a new cloth, Peep Eyewear has created a cleaning cloth which is made from upcycled 100% PET plastic bottles.

Eyewear cleaner

If you are short on time, the instructions above may not be suitable for you. In this case, you can use an eco-friendly cleaning solution. We do not recommend cleaning wipes as they contribute to unnecessary waste.

Here are two options for eco-friendly eyewear cleaning:

Ecopure

Ecopure is a company based in the UK. They are stocking an eco-friendly, biodegradable & hypoallergenic lens cleaner for your glasses. The cleaner is made from natural, sustainable and green ingredients. It is also free from artificial chemicals. Their bottles are made from bio polymer PET which is derived from sugarcane waste.

SeeGreen

Breitfeld & Schliekert is a German company that supplies SeeGreen, an eyewear lens cleaner that is manufactured without the addition of alcohol, silicone or volatile organic compounds. SeeGreen is environmentally friendly and climate neutral.

The don’ts of cleaning your lenses

  • Do not use tissue or toilet paper to clean your glasses as it can cause scratches.

  • Do not use household cleaning products as there might be ingredients that can cause harm to your lenses.

  • Do not use cheap cleaning wipes, not only are they bad for the environment, they can also damage your glasses.
